I don't think anyone in this discussion was trying to offend others. They just had different feelings about the discussion topic. I don't believe readers would literally hate Tessa, but they may have strong feelings of dislike toward her character or situation, for one reason or another. People can love whomever they want, and I don't consider it unnatural... as you gave some examples about marriage.
Finally, someone agrees. I was about to write a whole paragraph ranting on about the same exact reasons, but I read yours and realized you have all of the same points as me.
As far as I think, no one in this discussion was trying to change anyone else's opinion. We are here to express our own views, not to berate others'.
Coming to the topic, what you said is kind of my point too, though I see it a bit differently. As you said, Will and Jem would not have been okay with the whole situation. But the story played out like they were perfectly alright with it, or even happy. That's what I found 'unnatural'. As I said before, that is just my opinion and you are welcome to have a different one.
