I had very similar thoughts, Gail. The first book in the series was alright but I did struggle a little bit. However, as the series goes on I feel that they become easier to read. Like you said, I think she is really starting to hit her stride!
I read the first book while still in high school and I loved it! And i think being a younger reader I didn't pick up on any of the trouble in the writing, and as I've grown and read more, the books seam to get better. So even though I havn't noticed any bad parts, I've seen a lot of discussion on how some people havn't liked them.
