Rob The book is, mostly, about comparing the condition of love to that of having cholera--it's alluded to several times throughout the story with characters "falling ill" because they're so overcome with love. So, yeah, the book is about love, its many forms, and what it does to people.

Also, a motif is normally a concrete element that recurs throughout (e.g., the use of water in this story to indicate foreboding). Reason and passion are abstract ideas, and, therefore, would be considered themes.

Also, couldn't help but notice you JUST finished reading a book on nonviolent communication, yet opened your comment with a personal insult. Ha.
