When I was finished I felt like I didn't get it or I missed something. At the end of the day, it was a very simple story that got way too much hype.

I do believe that the Alchemist succeeded in what it set out to do - I do not "believe" in it - but I think it was well-crafted.
I'm so relieved to find that other readers had this reaction to the book, because I thought it was just me. After hearing raves about it, I thought I would love it, and I thought it was so trite that it was beyond boring.
The book is a very inspiring read. Throughout the book, the events are dull and predictable. But the way the character grows, it is beautiful. What it teaches you is that what we set out for, is not really what we truly want or dream of. I suggest a second read, book always feel different once you read them again.
Not unlike a non-fat decaf latte of philosophy books.
Exactly!! I read this book because everybody was saying such a great book it is and you must read it.. But I found it really disappointing.. It did not inspire me even a tiny weeny bit.. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about the book. I was ready to give up but I like to think positive so plodded along hoping something in the book would inspire me. I really thought something magnificent would happen in the last few pages, but No! Total waste of time and this book was on the top of my Christmas present list this year!:( Santa, I would like an exchange or a credit note please:))
Paulo Coelho is a famous and beloved writer whose ideas influence so many people all over the world. His ideas are very important specially because there are millions of people who believe in them and influence their life. That is why his books are translated and read by people of all nations on earth.
However, those ideas are so selfish and ego-centered that makes a man with similar characteristics, while build walls between people and takes it out of the society. He supports the competition and fighting, instead of cooperation and peace. He is fan of the “warrior of the light” and believes in alchemy and life elixir. All his books are full of miracles and magic and of fantastic symbols.
So, let's have a dialogue with him and his ideas. As he proposed to those who criticize his books, write a book instead, I listen to him and do so. A book opposite to each book of his, are written by me and have begun to be published as e-books and as hard copies.
Now you have a dialog (from the Greek word “διά-λογος”) in front of you, to read, evaluate and implement in your life. This is a dialogue which is present for the first time ever. Take advantage of it, come to your conclusions and stop believe blind what you read every time.
totally agree with Sally, it was a disappointment to me
I felt something was wrong with me because I didn't feel amazed.I even re-read it but no use, atleast now I know i'm not the only one
I didn't care for it. The philosophy was a mile wide and an inch deep.
This is unbelievable! I'm not judging, but I can't believe so many people did not like this book. I loved it. But this is actually inspiring, because it shows that even though there will always be someone who does not like your book, there will always be those who do like it. So there is hope for us all to find out own niche.
Totally agree with you, Frank.Usually, every book I read leaves a deep mark in my memory because it discovers another worlds, thoughts and points of view to me. This one, I don't even remember the plot, I just remember being utterly bored and struggling to finish it. And the cliches. Oh, the cliches-the only thing I hate. But then again, on the other side, if that is what inspires the average and barely educated people, makes their life easier and gives it a purpouse then I'm totally for it. As long as books aren't hateful, every commercialisation is alright.

This is blunt. Agreed I had similar feelings but I would concede that it did leave traces of inspiration. You cannot be totally not be inspired by it? Say at least a small incident in the entire journey would have left a lasting impression on your mind that might still be lingering now?

I myself thoroughly enjoyed this book when I read it perhaps 16 years back. I of course hadn't read other books like this one, though since then there have been several attempts.
I could never enjoy another Paulo Coelho book. They couldn't keep my interest and I didn't complete another (except perhaps the pilgrim).
