Debbie I laughed at that part, too! I also thought it was funny that the Alchemist totally threw this kid under the bus: "this child will become the wind and then you will let us go!" Like, become the wind? Right now?

Madison Murphy Well said, Huw!

message 3: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Cognard I agree, I have read much better inspirational books. I think I was more inspired by "I Know it When I See it" which is a business book. I didn't hate it but realluy not going to shape my life in any way.

message 4: by Michael (new)

Michael Well it's been on the NY Times best seller list for over two years so either the hype is causing people to read it or there's a lot of people that still like to read fairy tales. I read it and was totally put off by it's simplistic explanation of things happen. I put it in the same category as The Celistine Prophesy, The Shack, and Mitch Alboms "Five People You meet in Heaven" and "For One Day More". All of these have been big sellers despite their literary ineptnes.

Carla I considered this book formulaic and simplistic. It was also recommended by a friend that I hold dear. Whichever level is available to foster humane and respectful consciousness of people in the world around us has value. However, I think you do not grow on pap after a certain, tender, introductory phase.

أروى الحساني قرأته مترجم للعربية ، أعتقد أن الترجمة أفسدته وقتلت مذاقه .

Rida Shamsneh Exactly Huw, the English edition was bad, since i read some parts of the Arabic Edition and it was much much better than the English one!
I agree that the translation distract some of the novel's beauty!

message 8: by Beyond (new)

Beyond Paulo Coelho Paulo Coelho is a famous and beloved writer whose ideas influence so many people all over the world. His ideas are very important specially because there are millions of people who believe in them and influence their life. That is why his books are translated and read by people of all nations on earth.
However, those ideas are so selfish and ego-centered that makes a man with similar characteristics, while build walls between people and takes it out of the society. He supports the competition and fighting, instead of cooperation and peace. He is fan of the “warrior of the light” and believes in alchemy and life elixir. All his books are full of miracles and magic and of fantastic symbols.
So, let's have a dialogue with him and his ideas. As he proposed to those who criticize his books, write a book instead, I listen to him and do so. A book opposite to each book of his, are written by me and have begun to be published as e-books and as hard copies.
Now you have a dialog (from the Greek word “διά-λογος”) in front of you, to read, evaluate and implement in your life. This is a dialogue which is present for the first time ever. Take advantage of it, come to your conclusions and stop believe blind what you read every time.

Dr. Phoenix Pfffff ho hum...opinions are like grains of sand they get blown in the hot wind but have little effect on the truth. Criticism come so esily to those wh cannot and will not understand. Lots of hyperbole and envy abounds in these remarks
