I second both those recommendations.
Virginia Woolf's "On Being Ill" was interesting and "Catcher in the Rye" was a great read. Also, the "Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath" is great.
Another book that deals with mental illness is"The Noon Day Demon - An Atlas of Depression", which is more of a comprehensive study of depression. Kay Jamison wrote "The Unquiet Mind" and "Touched with Fire" - I really enjoyed those two.
I've seen the film of the hours, and it was sooo good, I didn't know there was a book, I'm definately going to read that now! :)
The book beats the film by miles. I didn't entirely dislike the film, but it really didn't come close to catching the breathtaking stillness and that amazing tension between melancholy and the desire to live the most of life that you get from the book.
