I agree with you.
But the book doesn't simply excuse the events of Tony's past as mere random travails and tragedy of life. It re-examines and endicts his actions constantly; a huge part of the point is to be able to examine the selfishness, imperception and arrogance that lead to the devastating harm to others. It's not just about sympathy for the storyteller.
