I guess because in the end, a lot of truth comes to light. It doesn't paint a pretty picture but my opinion was #1. It shows what the human mind is capable of in survival mode and #2. wow --- brilliant writing!
I think I remember in the end when the truth's revealed we learn that a young sailor had his leg amputated and used as bait, and Pi's mother was decapitated and we see her head sink beneath the surface of the ocean. no? It's been almost 10 years since I read it but those scenes seem to have stuck with me. Having said that, I think it's something most kids can handle. If they don't find certain parts too slow
