Yes. I do believe that the author stated in the beginning of the book that there were over 100 different islands. People do spend their holidays in far away, untamed, exotic places. A more plausible question would be why did they not keep looking for them and what indications there were that they were dead. This was not explained in the book after they returned. I loved this book though and was able to look beyond the few minor flaws. We can always find something wrong with each and every book read.
