I disagree with you. Their families are the responsibility of their deaths. The friction caused between their families brought friction and stress to Romeo and Juliet's death. Just as the Prince said, "A glooming peace this morning with it brings.
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head.
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things.
Some shall be pardoned, and some punished." Blaming the families of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet are definitely responsible for their own deaths. Even with all the other factors that led to them making the decision to kill themselves, in the end it does not matter, because they were the ones who made the decision to take their lives for each other. Romeo took out the poison flask when he though Juliet was dead. It was he who took it out and drank it, no one forced him to. It was Romeo's fault for his death. Juliet was the one who stabbed herself with Romeo's dagger. It was she who took out the dagger and stabbed herself, no one was there to make her do so. Romeo and Juliet are both responsible for their own deaths. Other characters led to their decision, however it was their decision to kill themselves.
Yes I agree with you Edrea Low that Romeo and Juliet were the cause of their own deaths. Juliet is primarly to be blamed since she had not informed Romeo of what she was about to do
I think that Friar Laurence is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he agreed to help Romeo and Juliet marry in secret. He realizes his mistakes later on in ACT 2 Scene 6 when he says: "So smile the heavens upon this holy act / That after-hours with sorrow chide us not!". So in turn Friar Laurence admits his mistake in marrying Romeo and Juliet and I think if they had not been married they would not have as much to hide and they would have both lived.
I also think that Romeo and Juliet were the ones responsible for their own deaths. No one else cant be blamed in this situation because it was Romeo and Juliet's choice to commit suicide, not anyone else's. They could have been living together happily their whole lives but their stupid decisions caused them to be put to death. It was really Romeo and Juliet's fault because it is just stupid to commit suicide without any reason. There was problems with both of the families but it shouldn't have interfered in the decisions of the two lovers.
I also believe that Romeo and Juliet caused their own deaths. In this case, their suicide was clearly by choice. No one told them to kill themselves. You also can't blame their suicide on mental illness because neither Romeo and Juliet is portrayed to have depression or any other mental illness. They simply killed each other out of love. Romeo stated, "'Tis torture, and not mercy: heaven is here,//Where Juliet lives; and every cat and dog//And little mouse, every unworthy thing,//Live here in heaven and may look on her;" explaining how banishment is worse than death because he would no longer be able to see Juliet (Romeo and Juliet). They themselves acted on their love much too quickly. In most cases, you don't marry the first person you fall in love with. This very well could've been the case with Romeo and Juliet. They got declared their love for each other and got married so quickly, the two never really had time to get to know each other or really figure out if they were in love before they killed themselves.
I agree, the final reason why Romeo and Juliet died is because they decided and committed their suicides.
Yes, I agree but at the same time Juliet was more at the fault because if she didnt pertend to kill herself then Romeo wouldnt have died. Then, if Romeo wouldnt have died then Juliet wounldnt have killed herself. Romeo was also dumb enough to not know that Juliet was still alive. So however at the same time it was both of their faults.
That is true, but who pushed them to that point where they had absolutely no choice but to take their own lives? They knew that their parents would not let them live happily ever after. Their feud was so terrible that it would resort to violence! According to Romeo and Juliet, "Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean"(Shakespeare, William 1). This shows that it was dangerous for them to even be seen together. Their parents were the ones who even pushed them to this breaking point.
I agree with Sarika, but also think about how old each of them were and the pressuring environment surronding them. Even though it is only Juliets parents that forced marriage upon the girl, at some point Romeo's parents would have required the same. Also at the point of the story where Romeo hear's about Juliets death, he had been banished and wanted dead living him nothing to live for other than Juliet.
I agree with your statement. Juliet and Romeo had technically commited suicide because of their emotions. I also agree that they could have thought there process of love more carefully.
I agree with the death being responsible by themselves because Romeo only killed himself because he thought that Juliet was dead. Also, and of course once Juliet saw that Romeo was dead, she let her love for Romeo take control of her life causing her to kill herself.
While I respect the response that Romeo and Juliet were responsible for their deaths and your argument is very persuasive, I'd like to say I hold their parents responsible. They were forever feuding between the families, even threatening Romeo with death and holding some unknown grudge. This emotional turmoil spilled off to R & J, and is why they hid their love from their parents. The teenage brain worked no differently back then than today, with impulsive behavior over proper planning. Yet I can't seem to conclude its two teenagers fault with this tragedy.
I feel that this is also a very valid point. If they did not choose to be so unwise with their decisions on how they handled the situations, they would not have a problem in the first place. Romeo made a carless decision and did not think twice to what happened to Juliet, he just immediately made a carless mistake which then caused the death of Juliet.
