Proust. I did read the entire 'Remembrance'. This will never be one of my favorite reads.
I have to agree Remembrance Of Things Past is a difficult novel. I recently read the first volume, 'Swann's Way', which I found to be very good. I am having a hard time getting my mind in the right place to read the next volume.
I have read the entire series, as well as long biography of Proust. I have traveled to France specifically to visit town where he grew up, his Paris apartment, and The Grand Hotel where he spent his summers. In the Grand hotel, which is indeed grand and has been refurbished, I actually stayed in Proust's room. Looking out the window at the beach below and the water, I could visualizes all the scenes he wrote about. Sitting in the grand dinning room, I heard the voices of all the myriad of characters he drew.
I have reread most of the novels. The difficulty in reading Proust is in the difference between his work and every other living writer. Proust's work so transcends the ordinary that it's shockingly brilliance and beauty overwhelms the reader, and one must give oneself over to it, fall into it. I have not really answered the question. But I will now:
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. I've read about a hundred pages and have no idea what it's about, except, perhaps, noses. I am reading it for a discussion group or I would fling it in the trash. Lita
