Judith I have the same concern about the Book Thief, I have it all set in my imagination, and don't want a disappointment!
I fell in love with the book. The images were already strong within the words of Yann Martel. Though I thought the movie was amazingly very close to the story of the book and very representative. Both we're great but I still think that the movie I made in my head while reading was better!
