You don't hve to like what happens to the characters to like the ending of the book. I liked the ending because I felt that Mistry had shown the "fine balance" of the title: that although their life circumstances were horrific, their love and caring for each other got them through. It's sad, sure: but it's also sweet. I loved this book and its ending.
I thought the book was excellently written, and it is one of the best books I've ever read. I found the end horrifying; not the book itself
