Isaac Asimov is my favorite writer of all time. Even including Robert Heinlein. Yes, he was a product of his time, but in his later stories in the 1980's and all too brief 1990's, he showed a sensitivity to the direction our culture is taking that is beyond anything in popular culture, even today. He cared about the survival of the human race and he was farsighted enough to write about key issues that most still have not realized. So I contend that he began as a product of his time but transcended it. Check out Prelude To Foundation and compare it to the disintegration of our own society. Asimov inspired the survival of the species through science and basic human decency.
