Of note, I especially identify with this repeating pattern:
Mentor: Nobody has done that before. You would have to do the impossible or die trying.
Sensible normal student: Understands this is discouragement. Is properly humbled. Listens to the mentor, learns, does well enough.
Siobhan: Understands is literally. Takes up a challenge. Does the impossible, almost dies trying. "Mentor, did I do well?"
Mentor: facepalms. HOW. WHY DID YOU DO THAT?
Siobhan: (baffled) I just did what you told me.
