J.S. Peck Try small promotional groups like Book Sweeps, Bookbub ads, Amazon ads, Robin Reads, Bargainbooksy, etc.

No matter what, it's not easy with all the new books coming out each day. But don't give up - you never know what's going to happen. All the best!

J.R. Gibson Hello
My name is JR Gibson and I have created a series of fairy tales called "A Collection of Fantastical Fanciful Fairy Tales". Promoting and marketing has been very hard, because I don't have social media, or a website, and am reluctant to spend money on paid advertising. I hope that Goodreads can help me with this.

What advice would you recommend?

JR Gibson

message 18: by Keven (new)

Keven Shevels I'm interested in any advice I can get. I'm the author of the Dogsbreath Histories series of comic novels tracing the history of the Dogsbreath family. The third novel is coming out soon and I've got to admit the writing and publishing aspects are easy. It's the marketing that really makes me pull my hair out. As I'm using these novels to raise funds for my local hospice any help is great fully welcome.

Jim Vuksic Diligent research prior to enlisting the services or advice of any literary marketing or promotional venue is imperative to receiving actual legitimate, experienced, and effective service and advice.

Most public libraries provide entire sections containing books, periodicals, and contact information of literary marketers, consultants, and programs that have established well-documented histories, track records, and recommendations from well-known, commercially successful authors.

The time, effort, and resources expended before making contact will help a novice author avoid scams or advice from someone who may not actually be qualified to provide it.

Very few actually achieve commercial success or even notoriety within this extremely competitive field. That said; some have. There is no reason why you may not eventually become one of them. I wish you success!

Hello there ,
Its really very disappointing when we get no sale .. :(
I understand that's why we have plan (free) in which we buy each other's book spread them , read , review , also we promote it on social media and all this happens through this shelf https://saptturangshelf.godaddysites.com

message 27: by Forrest (new)

Forrest Waide Hi Vincent, I'm a new author preparing to launch my debut Military Thriller in November. I just joined Goodreads and am looking to connect with folks who might accept a copy of my novel for an honest review. There seems to be a lot of discussion around the topic but no direct path to that end. I don't want to bother the disinterested or break any rules but can you direct me to the area in Goodreads where those who are so inclined reside? I really just want to connect with some reviewers in the Spy/Military Thriller genre. Thanks so much. Ben

Jasmine Hi Im looking for help for my book,

message 31: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Smaridge I'd like to ask a question. Like many authors I struggle to sell books, even though I've taken a some courses on it. However, my experience on each course comes down to these specific things:
a) badgering people who are facebook contacts to send me their
emails
b) spending 90% of my day working on marketing
c) spending lots of money I don't have on materials such as
bookmarks, posters, advertisements(printed or online) and
d) doing giveaways
None of which have given me enough sales to generate a cheque from Amazon or anywhere else I've put my books online. The only money I've recieved for my work is from the local bookshop and the library.
Is your course/group just about these things, or have you an entirely different take on marketing that's not expensive, doesn't use all my time and doesn't involve arm twisting?
I'm not being anti in any way, it's just that I'm tired of trying to get some sort of money for my work by following so called "guaranteed income" from marketing methods advertised by people online.

message 32: by Shirley (last edited Aug 16, 2022 07:27AM) (new)

Shirley Goodrum I'd be very keen, Vincent. I find marketing challenging and stressful to the nth degree! have had modest sales but good reviews for my book, Baggage in a B Cup available on Amazon.

message 36: by S.T. (new)

S.T. Jones Hi, Vincent. I S.T. Jonescurrently have two books out and I don’t have a lot of people buying them. Without spending money on marketing, it’s been a struggle to get the word out on my books. I’ve utilized social media but it doesn’t seem to be helping much. What would your advice be to get the word out about my book using free marketing?

message 37: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Toner S.T. Jones, I feel your pain. Promoting my book, as I tell anyone who will listen and maybe feel sorry for me, is the hardest job I have ever had. My book is on Facebook (many times, I think my friends hate me), Instagram, a few stabs at twitter; it's on my web site for my business. We made a trailer which is on YouTube.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfckS...) I have done giveaways on Goodreads (NEVER do a paperback giveaway, it costs a fortune to send out the books). I have a live reading scheduled at my local library on Sept 22, and it will be recorded and posted on YouTube. Have no idea what critical mass I have to get to before the waterfall begins. I am even writing to celebrities (Canadian) begging them to read it. I might even be a bit pathetic. Like you, I just don't know what to do next. I know it's good, I just can't seem to get others to look at it and find out if they agree. I have had several people (entities?) email me and offer to review(presumably positively) for money, but I have resisted that. No matter whether it would work or not, it makes my skin crawl. Over 700 folks here on Goodreads have it on the want to read lists, because of the giveaways, but they don't seem to BE reading it. So frustrated. There has to be a way.

message 38: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine I agree I feel like marketing is the hardest. I watched something you youtube that stated books sell when the title is catching to people and the cover page has to attract them is the first step. Then the most important thing is a topic that people are putting in the search engine.

message 39: by Biba (new)

Biba I've looked at some of you guys's profiles, and one thing most of you have in common: the covers really aren't that great. I'm not going to name names, but there needs to be some level of professionalism in your covers. Most of them look home-made and like you put them together in no more than five minutes. Use Canva, for example. I'm no author, but I've used Canva to design some pretty neat covers for my Wattpad (lol, I know) books. You don't even need to pay! Another option is to get someone else to design one for you, though that costs money.

message 40: by Dale (new)

Dale Lehman I used to do everything on the cheap, too. Now I do things on the cheapish (to borrow a word from Basil Fawlty). But you know that old saying, "It takes money to make money"? Weeeellll . . . it rather does, most of the time.

What I would suggest is spending what you can in the smartest way possible.

1. Make your work the best it can be. If you know someone who will edit it for free and can do a great job, wonderful. If not, maybe you need to spend some money on editing. That goes for your blurb, too.

2. Get a professional cover. I know a lot of people think they can make their own great covers, but actually only a few can. The cover is a marketing tool. Don't skimp on it.

3. When it comes to actual marketing, you need to build up a platform and engage in marketing activities. Email lists are the way to go. If possible, give away a meaningful freebie (like an actual ebook) in exchange for people's email addresses. Use StoryOrigin to build up your email list through swaps. Use services like Written Word Media's BargainBooksy to get your book out there.

4. Freebies have their place, but I personally don't like giving away my work. I put a lot of time and effort into it, and it's worth something in return. When I give away a book, I ask for something in return, like the customer's email address so I can send them newsletters and keep in touch with them. Otherwise, I sell books. I don't give them away. A lot of people pick up dozens if not hundreds of free books just because they're free, but they never get around to reading them all. There's no point in that. So get something in exchange, even if it's only an email subscription that might later be canceled. At least you have a shot at capturing their attention.

Each of these topics could be expanded upon, but that's the gist of what I know right now. Bear in mind that I'm not rich and famous, either. I'm struggling to get sales, too. I'm not making money yet, but I am getting some readers and, well, tax write-offs, which helps a little. ;-)

I was reading another tread & I noticed that some people take these comments a little personally; I just want to note that I'm not a beta reader, or a cover designer, or anything related to book publishing. All I do is read & review books, and I just wanted to share my opinion on the matter. I hope my comment didn't offend anyone or be taken the wrong way!
Have a great day :)

message 43: by Aryama (last edited Aug 29, 2022 10:22PM) (new)

Aryama Srivastav To all the people who think that marketing is hardest, yes you all are right it is , also a person said nothing is free it's true . Thinking how one can get free marketing is kind of greed you want everyone to buy your book book spending their money but you won't ?

Mind it help for others is somewhat help for yourself , I being a young author and web developer , marketer ( organic only no paid ) personally felt the same , so we decided to create a platform for author's where at least they can have the satisfaction of being read and reviewed. On https://saptturangshelf.godaddysites.com Author's Community we ask the author to submit contact form and we will buy , read , review also promote yours book but as I said help for help so you will also have to buy , read , review any author's book shown on shelf ( there is none of my benifit if you buy others book the author will get paid not me on the other hand I'll be buying yours )
Its about being a sold author it's not only mine it's yours platform , your community !! Welcome to all ...open for all author remember God help those who help themselves and I believe you all will come to the community if you all are actually author and understand how tough is it to be an author

message 44: by Kerry (new)

Kerry Kennedy You are right marketing is not necessarily hard, it's just very time consuming especially when you want to get books out and published. It's a great way, however, having said that to be able to interact with the readers of your books and answer questions they have. Thanks for sharing the link will check it out later this week.
