I wonder if Mr. Paolo might like David Drake's "Lt. Leary" series. Start with "With the Lightnings" and if that is enjoyed there are (at present) 12 more. It is not Miles, but the series doesn't take itself too seriously (although it IS space opera). Lt. Leary has the most incredible luck, and his supporting cast must be read to be believed. Give it a try!
