After two reads through Physicians of Vilnoc I was inspired to re-read Paladin of Souls. Something in PofV just pushed me in that direction. Of course, now that you mention Howl's Moving Castle that is another temptation, I love Sophie. And yet a different kind of demon in that novel.
When in a rrage, Sophie tells some flowers "Be daffodils in summer" and her talkative magic creates a liquid that is a very potent weedkiller. But it's always time for a reread of DWJ!
Ooh, I shall have to read Paladin of Souls again. As for Sophie, as another commenter mentioned, she does make a very potent weedkiller with her magic, but I've always seen her magic as less structured than Penric's. Sophie makes things more themselves while Penric and Desmedona actively alter. I have no idea if that's how you intended to write them, but that's my interpretation.
I also just gobbled up PofV, and now have the urge to reread all the Penric books. My tall TBR pile may have to wait a bit longer....
And now I also have the urge to start rereading DWJ - it's been a couple years. And the TBR pile continues to grow....
I'm reminded of the sonic screwdriver in "Doctor Who", which doesn't work on wood! But this is an interesting question from Kate; I hadn't thought of it before.
There were places in the stories where Des *really* needed to get rid of chaos, and the rat or other vermin-creature was not just killed but ground to dust. My fan-speculation would be that killing and rotting a tree would have a very low efficiency in terms of shedding chaos - about the same as grinding a just-killed creature to dust - and so would be a desperation measure only. Sort of like eating bark or grass when starving.
