Jonathan Palfrey I'm reminded that Forester started writing Hornblower's career in the middle, then went back and filled in the early parts later. As a result, if you read through his career in chronological order, he suddenly turns a bit wooden when you reach "The Happy Return", because that was the first book written, and Forester wasn't fully comfortable with the character at that point.
