I'd love to get a glimpse at Gregor's thought process here, especially why he'd choose Ivan instead of Miles. Fodder for a new short story perhaps?
It actually says it in at least one of the books: the council of counts would revolt. That's why both Miles and Ivan were separately shown to be vastly relieved when Gregor started reproducing.
