Jerri Lois, always a joy to discover someone else who has read and thought about Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories".

Lois Bujold I have, although that particular quote is from his intro to The Fellowship of the Ring. (He may have used the thought twice -- too long since I read the essay.)

Margriet I see, you mean personal applicability and you certainly have me there. I could write a paper, but I only have a box. I think of Ekaterin going to see the prince and realizing her son has no shoes on all the time. “Most days it’s just stumbling in the dark with the rest of creation...” That line helps me cut myself some slack, and others, too. We’re all in this mess together :D No character has ever had the impact on me that Aral did, and I don’t even know why. When the inevitable happened, I took it harder than I’d like to admit. I could go on, but you have certainly succeeded in your goal with me.

Lois Bujold I don't know that "applicability" is limited to the personal (by whatever definition), but that's the reader's job, not mine...

Judy R. "Applicability" -- right. That explains why most fantasy leaves me bored; it's not relevant or useful.
