Derek I remember reading the transcript of an interview a couple years ago... The interviewer asked where the author found their inspiration, and the author replied something along the lines of "I just take a step back and consider the worst possible thing that could happen to my character right now, then do that." Was that you?

Lois Bujold Derek: I've said things like that, but the emphasis should be heard as "to THIS character" rather than in general, the idea being that each individual has a different worst nightmare/great test. Trials should be tailored.
This maxim has an unspoken codicil, "that they can survive and learn from," else the story will be cut too short.

Ta, L.

Jonathan Palfrey Penric is about half my age, and he has Desdemona and Nikys. He also has a series of problems that he probably handles better than I would; but, nevertheless, I'd like to be Penric.
