If you ever read the novel Misery, Paul Sheldon had a Concordance for all the character in his Misery series.

For me, outlining is more a general roadmap that gives me an idea where I want to take a story. Pantsing, though, is fun. I've had a central character take a turn that I hadn't considered in the outline.
