Margaret Though I think Byerly comes off even better in Captain Vorpatril's Alliance.

Talli Ruksas It definitely sounds like a description of By but I still think everyone should start with Shards of Honor. Of course I love them all except the villains (love to hate?)

Jerri I did my first read of this series starting with The Warrior's Apprentice, and continued on through what was available then, before going back in time to Shards. And I am glad I did, since the books about young Miles are rather different when all the reader knows about his parents is what HE knows. Then, when you get to read them again, knowing the full back story from Shards and Barrayar, you get an entire new reading experience. But knowing the back story, you can never "unknow" it and read Warrior's Apprentice knowing only what Miles knows. I have read (and listened to the audios) multiple times, but the impact of my first reading of Warrior without the back story still remains strong.

Talli Ruksas I honestly can't remember my first read since it's been decades. I think Barrayar hadn't even been written yet. Then there was a gap where I couldn't find Kindle versions and didn't want to read the newer books without rereading the older ones (which are still hiding in a box somewhere). So I suppose my experience is not typical.

Irene Michlin Playboy but also a spy sounds like Ivan to me. :) And he had a whole book to himself.

Talli Ruksas Really? I don't see Ivan as a spy or even a classic playboy. Cheerful man-slut maybe...
