Jonathan Palfrey A friendly sorcerer could be handy around the house in many ways, some of which have already been documented. Preita, to whom Penric was almost married, missed her opportunity; although his career might not have suited her well.

Sandy It might be possible to develop tech that would acheive that (presuming it doesn't already exist somewhere). We already have 'weapons' that match sound frequencies to stop sound. You can instantly shut a person up with them. It is certainly plausible to perhaps match electrical frequencies to create a negative effect, some electrical pulse that matches frequencies to stops certain bugs in their tracks but leaves other life alone. Potentially useful but also likely incredibly harmful tech, should people use it against people to stop hearts. Then again, maybe it would just be a better stun gun. Causing only temporary disruption, like a seizure, that is quickly resolved without harmful effects (unless you hit your head falling down).

Brzk Had to google Japanese Beetle. We have them too, albeit not in such vast quantities. Why do we all want to recruit Penric for tasks? I'd invite the whole (extended) family to dinner. Another thought - if pure chaos is required, there is no need for a temple-trained sorcerer. Some bug-crazed bird or a weasle maybe? Soap water? Mint oil? Heavy rain? Can Penric commune with vegetables?

Jane Bigelow Oh, I'd definitely invite the whole family to dinner, *too*. Soap water works on: beetles that you can find; beetles that don't wake up and fly away; beetles that are in my yard and not waiting somewhere close by. I just thought Penric could come by, solve one of his problems and one of mine at the same time, and then sit down to dinner in a blissfully beetle-free garden with my family and his.

Brzk Sleazy bastards. You have my sympathies, lady. For both being unable to get rid of the bugs and for the lack of a sorcerer with Penric's other unique characteristics.
