Penric seems to me pleasantly unusual: he retains into adulthood a rather childlike cheerfulness, friendliness, and openness. There's nothing dark, grumpy, or negative about him. Anyone needing to share accommodation would find him a congenial candidate.
It is difficult to come across decent and kind characters in stories. I feel like maybe some people find caring characters to be boring? Or unrelateable? Because, truth be told, kind people are hard to find too, not just characters. So maybe they can't relate to a character who isn't like them?
I won't rant too much about how I can't stand humans as a species, but really... humans are de-evolving (or evolving) into small-brained, uncaring, unempathetic, entitled, eyes on the unrealistic selfish prize, blame everyone else, mouth breathers who are more bloat and bleat than brain.
I rarely interacted with the masses even before the plague seeped into existence. It's just given me a valid reason to stay away from them and society in the long term. Who needs those things?
Anyway, I rambled because Penric is one of the good-natured souls of the universe and I'm glad he's not on this planet because I'd hate for him to be bruised or burned by how nasty earth-humans can be. <3
"Normal people carrying on with unthinking kindness must be as shocking as sudden sunlight to such dark-adapted eyes..."
What a great line. I remember noticing it when I read the story. I think this is one of a number of reasons why I am loving the Penric tales. I understand why Desdemona has come to love him so much. And others also.
