Karenhunt Down in the South (Mississippi), they just called themselves South. Captain Antan of New Moon Cutoff had patrolled in South Seagate, which I've taken as another Hinterland to the east. Either sort of around Florida or maybe as far north as Virginia.

Lois Bujold "South Seagate" sounds very plausible for one of the remaining hinterlands, yes. East coast from wherever New England/Seagate tails off down to whatever stub of Florida there is...

Marie Funnily enough, just now, while looking at maps for an upcoming trip, I saw a "Leech Lake" - in north-central Minnesota! Naturally I looked for "Hickory Lake" though the only thing I found there was a campground in northeastern Ohio (no lake named Hickory in sight).

Lois Bujold I've been to Leech Lake. It is not named for its shape... :-)

My "Hickory Lake" was very loosely based on Indian Lake, Ohio, where my grandfather had his retirement cottage when I was a kid. Lots of hickory trees, though.
