Actually, I've always been impressed with the thermodynamics of the Pen & Des stories. It is obvious that Des manipulates entropy, although she calls it "chaos".

Which is also the direct connection to biology, which doesn't do so either -- the self-creation of local order in biological systems is always at the cost of shedding or waste of increased disorder into the environment. Life has been described, memorably, as rising by climbing up the mast of a sinking ship.
