I don’t personally have experience with this but want to say that its worth having a look at Ilona Andrews blog. Over the years they have published a lot of information about how the publishing world works and they have experience with traditional publishing and self publishing. It might be a good place to start for down to earth author insights.

From the perspective of a niche reader I find the majority of my new authors through a) Amazon and Goodreads recommendations, b) review sites that follow my niche, and c) Goodreads reader groups that do reviews and awards. You might also look into NetGalley .com - I've used many reviews by their readers to choose new authors. I hope this is helpful.
