Still so much information to be potentially deduced from the throwaway line, it was hardly a random fact (Bel had been to Earth or at least to some near space station and had liked it well enough to get a small memento; there is inevitably some level of want for companionship when one gets a pet; Bel obviously is a caring and gentle person, and/or an exceptionally disciplined one if a hamster survives despite their grueling working schedule, etc. Also, Bel's cabin IS a home (homely?), more so for him than for others who have a secondary/primary place to fall back to in between assignments...). And yes - hamsters are not long-lived creatures. and yet he did not get a turtle. Poor Bel.
I like to think Mass Effect 2 called back to this by having Commander Shepard be able to buy a hamster on the Citadel.
I wonder what kinds of pets they keep on Beta Colony? Seems like anything small enough to keep on a spaceship would work there too (maybe in the future they have non-stinky litter options so you don't have to live with hamster smell)!
Maybe on vegetarian Beta they would be too concerned about the rights of the animals to keep many pets, unless they were very well kept and happy.
Wasn't there a fish tank in Cordelia's mothers home, which C used against those attempting to hinder her escape? Pets of sorts.
