I was really impressed with Gemini too. I don't see too many stories that are directly negative toward our faith, but I do often feel that it is misunderstood, and things like the recent Wired article on Brandon Sanderson make it clear that such information is much more widespread than I would have liked, My favorite thing about Gem is that he's a kid, just like all the others. He has his own (very interesting) personality of course, and his faith is obviously important to him, but he doesn't have to be treated as other as a result of any of that. So I will echo Ray's sentiments in thanking you for writing this character. And for writing Daughter of the Deep in the first place. I loved it almost as much as I loved reading the OG Percy Jackson series as a kid.
As a young LDS member, I was so happy to see this character without many of the misconceptions surrounding our faith. Thank you for the kind comments and the effort you put in to support all people.
I must echo these posts. I'm a serious Riordan fan from the first Percy Jacson book onward and an active Latter-day Saint, and I was surprised and heartened that an LDS character appeared in your book. I was pleased and warmed at the casual respect shown to Gemini's religiousness; we don't usually see that happen. You definitely made points with me! . . . The only thing wrong about this book is that there isn't going to be a second book!
I completely agree with all of this. I'm a Latter-Day Saint as well, and I was so happy when I realized that Gemini Twain was too! I think Daughter of the Deep was the first book I've ever read with an LDS character. And you did it so well! I love how you even included that his brother was on a mission.
Could you tell me which book this character is in? I'm a Latter-day Saint also, and have enjoyed Rick's books in the past.
Gemini Twain is a character in Daughter of the Deep. It's a standalone based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
My friend read this before I did and when it introduced Gem she immediately told me I needed to read it because it had an LDS person in it. I loved it and loved that Gem had a part in it. :)
