Only if we're not paying attention... or, having paid attention, are too frightened to do what is right.
I also think that as well as the brainwashed there were MANY who DID NOT AGREE.As wellas brainwashing there was the BRUTALISATION of the German People;
everything the nazis did to the Europeans they first tried out/used on the german people. FEAR was one of their BIG weapons and it works and is used in America today
eg fear of socialism when Canada next door is and has more guns but when trouble arises the first reaction is NOT the gun but discussion. In France the Government fears the People which is more how it should be!!!
It is sad that so many people were indoctrinated by Hitler and the Nazis instead of thinking for themselves. But who am I to criticize. I might have done the same thing. Who knows.
@Aeseyman: "...too frightened to do what is right" with good reason. I think the reason we honour heroes is that being able to think clearly and "do what is right" in the face of serious danger is very hard, and we all know it. If it were something anybody could do, it wouldn't be admirable, it would be normal. I feel that the extent to which we honour and admire bravery and self-sacrifice is the extent to which we should have compassion for those who do not manage it. As opposed, of course, to those who willingly participate in evil.
