Yes, I definitely got the impression it was to please his parents but mostly his father, whom we never meet. He seems to have been away serving Hitler in some capacity. Frederick is afraid of disappointing his parents. They seem to be totally incapable of realizing the he was unsuited for such training and such a school. Both times when we meet his mother when Werner visits, his mother has to go out. Clearly she is a socialite and although she apparently loves her son, she's not sensitive to what he's like. She does not preserve his books on birds.
I think "to please his father" is anachronistic to that time and place in history. Today we have the luxury of such choices that didn't exist in Nazi Germany. (That said, the mother was probably a narcissist in any context!)
