The grandchildren with the sense to hold onto any and all historically relevant documentation, letters, journals, memory books, photos, etc. are the most wise, even if for themselves and their grandparents' legacy of being a part of something historically terrible or amazing. I'm a wary researcher always -- even if it's nothing more than where to stay when traveling or a new restaurant, but when it comes down to what comes from my own fingertips by way of words, I am particularly keen on accuracy. I loathe needing to be corrected or criticized for something so base-critical to even give something authenticity, let alone something to let people familiar with some detail feel at home with and nod their approval of if at all possible. Your 30+ pages of references at the end of The Devil in the White City was something I pointed out MANY times to others AS WELL AS your additional explanation of when and where you had to imagine transitions that just couldn't have been documented. I loved that honesty and the evidence of how diligently you DID try to leave as little room for necessary fiction as possible.
