I really appreciate this answer. There will be some people with issues still, but I like seeing all different kinds of depictions of your characters. I am so excited to see Leah portray Annabeth!!
Rick, your comment made me smile. I just wanted to say thank you for making my day, and for pointing out all of these important* things <3
AMEN! i love how you are so good loving people and with people who like to change or add things to your characters.
This is absolutely the way to go to treat everyone with proper respect. It’s also unfair to assume that EVERY artist drawing Annabeth as white is racist or has malicious intentions. If there is no precedence to believe that, then there’s no reason to accuse those artists of such a thing. Thank you Rick for your complete and thoughtful response to this question. I hope whoever submitted this understands.
Thanks Rick, very grateful for your open attitude there. I read the books very young, and I imagined annabeth as white then, influenced by the description in the book and (I am ashamed to admit) aslo a bit by Alexandra Daddario. That image has been with me for a while, and I am unwilling to give it up or be shamed for having iagined her like this. I can even empathise with feeling a bit uneasy when an actress is cast who looks very different from what one has imagined, as is probably the case for many with Leah Jeffries. However, actors never look exactly like one's imagination of a character, and this will not prevent me from being excited to watch the show. Especially considering that this time it was your casting choice and your script, which guarantees this to be an incredible experience!
love this; calling it racist to draw annie as white is unfair. there isn't one annabeth, or one canon annabeth. drawing her white doesn't mean you think badly about leah or black annabeth. as an artist, i draw annabeth both ways, my mood decides whether it's book annie or show annie, or headcanon annie.
this is so respectful and honest, as people often assume the worst of others and this is when hatred is spread online. everyone imagines a character differently, based on their experiences and who they are. if you were to tell people to draw the same person it’s more likely than not that they would draw them differently. i wholeheartedly agree with this and it is upsetting when some people can’t accept something and be open to it. it is also bad to assume that because someone drew a character how they imagine that they are being attacked online and being called horrible things instead of being celebrated for their art.
Well said! I’ve always loved getting lost in a book cause it lets my imagination go wild!
One of my students couldn’t believe I preferred reading over movies and tv. I think to him it was crazy that someone would like books better than tv or movies. Lol! 😂
