A delightful surprise to us too!
A couple of suggestions:
*Maybe Pen could run into a descendant of one of Des's former riders? Or some other aspect of their lives that their respective "layer" in Des could help with, the way Mira helped out in "Dance", or Ruchia in "Prisoner". Preferably (for Pen's sake) nothing medical though.
*Maybe Pen decides to revisit his childhood home/family in the Cantons and gets swept up in a new adventure with old friends and/or in old haunts? Maybe something to do with the new Princess Archdivine of Martensbridge and her court sorcerer?
Oh, I keep a notebook around the house, to jot ideas as they occur, but most of them die out of my interest after a day, or sometimes an hour. The limiting factor is not ideas, but my energy-of-interest. Which no one else can help me with, I'm afraid.

I *really* wish the Ask An Author had a darn SEARCH function.
If it did, I wouldn't have to wonder if I'm asking an obvious question that had been addressed many times.
