Eleanor With Cats Hmm. You're probably right, in terms of general reaction. *I* don't care, because I've loved all of your books except The Spirit Ring (sorry!) and I almost always read by author, whatever they write, but people do get set on certain things they want to see. (Cough cough Laurell K. Hamilton fandom cough cough ahem.) I've even heard one person complain when authors they love write a standalone, because she wants a series to enjoy the characters. (She stopped reading George R.R. Martin though.) I always figure the writer can write some really awesome new thing and THEN write the next novel in a series. It wouldn't be evolution without mutations, right? And I'm pretty cool with whatever in the series they want to write about. I'm curious to see what happens - very, very curious, which is why I (personally) crave plot hints.

My one exception is characters I want to read more about whatever they run into. Like Mark. And Simon. And Cordelia too! So I'm quite happy we're getting more of her. :)

Eleanor With Cats Actually. I REALLY want to know if Aral is still alive in it. But again, if you say he's not, I can picture some people deciding not to pick it up. Which is really annoying. People should be more curious. (Like Miles, right?)

Eleanor With Cats This would make an awfully interesting poll/experiment for a publisher marketing division. I mean a properly scientific one. Get a large sample size of fans, give a third of them plot info a year before the book, give a third of them plot info 7 months before publication, and give a third group plot info 2 months before publication. Of course ideally you'd keep the entire group in a secure location for the year until they get their plot info and are released into the wild. That way you guarantee the people who have to wait for plot info really don't get any spoilers. If there were enough books in the secure location they might not mind, either. And it would keep the marketing division busy instead of letting them mess with cover art. No?

message 4: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Maybe some little background – as *when* and *where*, (we already know *who*… ;-) )

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura Personally, I'll be fine with whatever standard cover blurb you eventually release. I've already seen a little bit of speculation around here based solely on the title, and….well, they certainly seem to be rushing towards the finish line.

I'm just excited for more Cordelia!

Eleanor's comment about the characters is pretty spot on. I am totally accepting of the fact that Cryoburn could be the end of Mile's tale. We've seen so much through his eyes; and yet, I've always found that experiencing him through other's perspectives is both humorous and rewarding (even as an off-hand remark). But because we've been limited to him (and Mark, Ivan, Kareen), I feel Cordelia has become slightly enigmatic. So, I'm happy to see her step up the plate again.

message 6: by Mike (new)

Mike Voss I just want to read it :-)

You fall into the rather small category of authors I will
buy a new work of fiction from without needing to know anything beforehand. Spoilers? No way. I've learned to love being surprised after being a spoilerholic for a couple of tv shows a decade ago. What kind of surprises do I like? The end of Cryoburn is one of my favorites, despite being a once-in-a-series kind of thing. The smaller ones that fill up a well-written story will do just fine :-)

message 7: by Jean (new)

Jean I agree with Mike. I'll buy anything you write. I love your style and the characters and worlds you build. So more input from you will just make me clap my hands and go "oh, goodie, goodie", whatever it may be.

message 8: by Denise (new)

Denise O'hare I too agree with Mike, and I am thrilled at the prospect of being involved with Cordelia again, awaiting the release provides a lovely sense of anticipation gore the rest of the year.....

message 9: by Denise (new)

Denise O'hare Dammed Spell check put "gore" into my response should read for! Ttfn Denise

message 10: by Eleanor (new)

Eleanor With Cats Denise, your spellcheck also doesn't like profanity. ;)

message 11: by Liz (new)

Liz White oooo a new Cordelia book. cant wait to buy it :)

message 12: by Nicola (new)

Nicola Hamilton The only thing I want to know in advance is where it fits into the chronology.

message 13: by Sue (new)

Sue I liked the little teaser that was allowed out encoded. Really, that was plenty. I must admit, I loved the funny interview that you did with Miles, prior to Cryoburn. I am glad that you can still have some fun, whilst simultaneously torturing your characters. A writer's job shouldn't just all be typing, after all. I think all of our Dads probably told us, "A little bit of mystery makes the anticipation sweeter. Put it all out there at once, and there is nothing more to see." I think my Dad put it much more eloquently (and was of course referring to me wearing more clothing when I went out), but none the less, I think the principal is the same here.

message 14: by Christine (new)

Christine I plan to buy it the moment the eARC is available, spoilers or none. I'm curious about where it fits into the chronology, not having seen the encoded teaser...

message 15: by Margaret (new)

Margaret I try diligently to avoid spoilers. So I'm in the reveal less column. Again, I'd read anything that you wrote. I loved both the Sharing Knife books and the Spirit Ring books as well as all of the Vorkosigan universe books. I especially enjoyed Ivan's recent book. So I would recommend caution, especially before the eARCs are available. I'm simply thrilled that now I have a Cordelia Vorkosigan book to look forward to in the future! :)

message 16: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I agree with a few of the others, I buy all of your books instantly upon sight, no matter how much or how little I already know about it. And I'm very excited to have Cordelia back, apparently front and center. I would be ecstatic if the entire book just fell off your keyboard and into my hands. ;) So, spoilers aren't an issue for me. I suppose, if I must take others into consideration, I would settle for knowing approximately where it falls in relation to the other books on the timeline. (I've always wanted more of Aral and Cordelia- after Barrayar, but when Miles was still younger. It sounds like so many interesting things were happening then. But I would be equally happy with Cordelia after Cryoburn.) But, by all means, tell me as much as you care to reveal. :)

message 17: by Vorkosiganfan (new)

Vorkosiganfan I just want to know the timeline (with Aral or not?), so I can manage my own expectations. I admit I'm hoping for without Aral, but I'll buy it no matter what. THANK YOU for doing another Cordelia story. She's such a wonderful character and I can't wait to read more about her.

message 18: by Terry (new)

Terry Lois, your assessment sounds spot on. I'm happy to trust your instincts and experience and have no doubt it will be worth the wait. Thanks!

message 19: by Karenhunt (new)

Karenhunt For anyone who wants to see the published snippets from Gentleman Jole (with enough info to deduce the timeline), you could go to http://vorkosigan.wikia.com/wiki/New_...
(These are from chapter one, scene one, and can be found on the Baen site as well)

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the contents of your head that I want to read! The things I can make up myself are not nearly as good as yours :-) I am not curious for the contents of the book, I am just happy you wrote one. I do look forward to it with anticipation, wishing I could curl up with it and start enjoying. Spoilers, no spoilers, doesn't matter.. Thank you for writing!

message 21: by Derek (new)

Derek Knox Spoilers don't bother me. I plan to get the book even if you decided to do a point by point breakdown. I might prefer if you kept silent on any shocking deaths or story changing twists. But i find spoilers insufficient reason to avoid a book or movie, I'll still enjoy the mental journey. I would like to see something along the lines of the blurb on the back cover, just so we have some idea about what it's about.

message 22: by Sean (new)

Sean The fact that it's by your hand is enough for me. :-D

message 23: by Ita (new)

Ita As much info as possible so the book I write in my head while waiting will be closer to what you actually wrote.

message 24: by Celtic (new)

Celtic Bujold on the spine of a new title is enough for me. Many thanks for taking the time to ask ... and answering all these questions; it's much appreciated.

message 25: by Woman Who Weaves (new)

Woman Who Weaves I am going to have to buy the eARC, because I have a limited ability to resist spoilers. I will later get one of the large paper backs for the shelf.

message 26: by Michael (new)

Michael Bernstein Basically: Who + When, and whichever ones of Where, What, or How that sets up the tension of the situation without being spoilery.

You could treat it as an exercise in writing a cover blurb.
