Have you read Hillary Mantel's 'Wolf Hall'? The BBC adaptation is good but the book is better; much richer.

I keep hearing good things about Wolf Hall. I am not up for anything quite so dense, chewy, and dire just at present, but it's certainly on my "someday when I feel more ambitious" list.
