Karen I would start with his classic. The True Believer, but In Our Time is good, and The Ordeal of Change has a chapter and the scribe, the writer, and the rebel which is good. He shaped my thinking as a young woman (I am now in my 60's). I gave a lecture on his works at 19 for my college Political Science class, and was excused from talking the final by our professor. I impressed him! I have not read him lately, but will re-read, because some of his thinking is timeless, and I do think "True Believers" cause much trauma in the world today. They are not long books, but I savor them! Have you read Toni Morrison's "playing in the dark?" She discusses writing and literature. Anyway, let me know what you think!

Candi Sary You must have understood Hoffer's work well for your lecture to excuse you from your final. I'm looking forward to reading him! I just ordered The True Believer. I'll let you know what I think after I've read it. I haven't read Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark. The only writing book I have of hers is a book of interviews called Conversations with Toni Morrison. I'll add Playing in the Dark to my list as well. Thanks so much for connecting!
