Maria The Mint is on its way to me in the mail. My impression of Seven Pillars is that Lawrence was the ultimate Fixer: well traveled, well educated, a smooth talker (in 3 languages, no less), and enormously capable. But very young for the responsibility he took on. (Much like Miles in that regard.)

Historically, Seven Pillars gives a fantastic view of what the Middle East was like 100 years ago, but I thiink it's best to read a general history of that time first. I recently read Scott Anderson's book, Lawrence in Arabia, whch came out last year, and thought it was a good introduction to how the borders of the modern Middle East were drawn after WWI.

Thanks for the response!

Sarah I guess that partly explains why I love your books so much. I too read Seven Pillars of Wisdom at far too young an age because I was fascinated by TE Lawrence. I think 9th grade? Not sure I understood much, though I'm not sure I'd understand it very well now that I'm in my 30s either! Miles is much more approachable!
