This seems the closest to the truth to me as well, if we will ever know the author's thinking. She wants to know whether her brother was corrupted like these other 17 year old boys or whether he was still 'her' Werner - only Marie Laure could tell her. She is ashamed of what Germany has done, and he was part of it, but her love for him complicates her feelings. It makes her need to find Marie Laure urgent.
