Katie Laugen I successfully used Goodreads in my classroom last year with both 7th and 8th graders. Students set their own reading goals that they kept track of on an index card (old-school library style), and at the end of each quarter, we would go on Goodreads and they would add and rate the books they read. They were required to write one book review (after we had a lesson on what makes a good book review and reading several examples!). Some of my students absolutely loved it and still use it today. I also had some parents come in at conferences saying that they loved that I started using this. They thought it was teaching their students to use social media appropriately and gave them a realistic use for book reviews. It warmed my heart.

Katie Clark One thing that is great is making a private group (you can post your rules and procedures) for recommending/discussing books. I've done this with my students, allowing parents to join, too, if they'd like. Form a group, select private, then have students/parents follow you so that you can invite them to the group. I have some students on GR that I still recommend books to, and they can continue to see the books I'm reading.

K Pernille, I suggest marking the finish date on all of your reads so they count toward your yearly challenge. It's fun to track!
