I reread the PJO series (for, like, the thousandth time) a few days ago and actually... there are aspects of his personality that I would say were pretty manipulative? Mostly when he kills monsters by acting like their friend and lopping their head off, which is kinda scary because neither he or the reader really notices how good he is at manipulating people/monsters. It's just battle strategy. (and we can't ignore the "dark Percy" events of HoH and BoO)
I would definitely want to be a friend to Percy because he would be a terrible enemy (and now that we're talking friends can I be Leo's friend COUGH girlfriend COUGH too)

Absolutely agree. In the first series, I think it was more subtle and I always passed it as a survival need. But the more I think of it, I find Percy rather dark and quick to go to extreme ways, but I guess it's hard to tell because we don't have a reference point to tell what is right and wrong when you're faced with a blood thirsty monster who's going to resurect anyway.
