Same here, finished the book at 4 am and still confused; the first 2/3rds took for ever and finished last page last night at 3;42 am; did Frederick get the letter and the diamond? Or his nephew? Maybe the diamond is back in grotto; ashes to ashes, dust to dust; coal mining and diamond from a mine, same source but diff perceived values; not my all time fave but definitely shook me up? So who did Marie Laure marry? Her daughter? Still some questions....
She didn't marry. She had her daughter with her 2nd lover and they parted ways when he found out she was pregnant.
I did not realize Werner knew what was in the house. Did I miss that? I think he did go back and rescue the house and then figured out how to open it and put the key in. I think the diamond is still in the house and Marie will never die!! as she now has it back.
I finished the book at 2:30 in the morning night before last while sitting next to my husband in his hospital room. I was not sad. I was aware. I was thankful. This is life. No guarantees. The important thing is to find your path AND nurture the love you have for others. Do not leave those you love behind while you go off seeking your fulfillment. If you love as deeply as ML did, and as Werner eventually came to do - then when your end comes you have experienced the greater thing, greater than the biggest diamond. You unveil the hidden lights, they are love.
