Monie Hayes Thanks for the suggestions. Based on the available choices in my smalltown library, I checked out _The Night Strangers_ and _The Double Bind_, and I have to say I'm getting into the former more. I love a ghost story (I sometime teach a summer class about ghostly stories to kids), and while I, too, love _Gatsby_, I'm afaid that when I flipped to the back of _Double Bind_ looking for author info, my eyes fell upon a discussion question that deflated my interest in reading on. I'm particularly eager to read _Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands_. I'm teaching an adolescent lit. class (for future h.s. English teachers) this fall. Okay if we send you questions if we read your latest novel together? And am I right in thinking that although the protagonist is a teen, you didn't write the book as adolescent fiction? Finally, what does your daughter think of your ability to create such authentic girls in your writing? Thanks for the answers & esp. for the reading experience.

Sherril Monie, I too loved Midwives. In fact, it's one of the few books I've read twice (so much to read, so little time!). I have since read every one of the book Chris Bohjolian mentions. I would choose The Double Bind next and continue from there.
