James Mullins Dimitrios,

There are also some great out of print choices that can be found on Amazon. Gillian Bradshaw wrote several books set during the late Eastern Empire and early Byzantium. They are less military centric but are great stories rich in detail. They are: Imperial Purple, The Beacon of Alexandria, and The Bearkeeper's Daughter. A great story involving intrigue and the military is Michael Ennis' Byzantium. Finally if you also enjoy Zombies check out Zombies of Byzantium and Scourge of Byzantium. Both are set in a historically accurate Byzantium minus the Zombies of course. Thanks for your suggestions Gordon. Many of those I haven't read. I'll be sure to check them out!

Jane Dimitrios,
I can add some more to the list:
Letters from Melite / Michael Sant: Malta during the Byanzantine period, the Arab war
Dark Angel / Mika Waltari: fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans
the whole John the Eunuch mystery series / Mary Reed -- set in the time of Justinian.
The immortal emperor / Donald Nicol. Biography of Constantine XI Palaiologos, emperor at the fall of Constantinople.
