Whenever I hear this question directed at someone (or myself, for that matter), my maternal grandmother comes to mind. She said she would title her memoirs "I lived my life so I can look any son-of-a-b*tch in the eye and tell 'em to go straight to hell". There is a sound wisdom in there somewhere, and I think a journey from darkness into light may have been the basis for the phraseology.
