Suzy Davies Although I have not read the book you recommend, I am well-read, and agree with what you say. I am glad that most people appreciate a well-written book. However, it continues to surprise me, that sometimes writers who do not understand the basics of grammar and use of language seem to get by with what they write. I do hope that this is not a sign of "dumbing down" and lower standards.

Stuart Aken Thanks Suzy. I think there's a definite difference in the expectations of readers and readers who are writers in this respect. Writers should be aware of the rules of their trade, of course, but many manage with poor language because a lot of readers concentrate on the story rather than its presentation. This isn't a new phenomenon: poorly written books have been popular for as long as reading has been available to the masses.

Suzy Davies Yes, I agree. I hate elitist views about writers and writing. However, to be skilled at the craft takes a great deal of commitment, and you have to practise to make perfect. I believe this is rewarded in the long run.

Stuart Aken Agreed. If possible, we should write every day: the more a skill is practised, the better we become at it.
