I guess I would take it a step further and say that I thought Frederick's mother was totally clueless about who her son was. She dismissed his interest in birds. She seemed to be living in her own little selfish world - something that Werner sensed when he first visited.
I agree; his mother didn't want an ornithologist for a son, she wanted a war hero. So he pretended to be the perfect son for her, and she believed him. Avoiding specific spoilers, it makes it all the more poignant when she tries to get through to him with birds after it's far too late.
But...Fredrick's mother bought him the book of birds when he was a boy, knowing he would love it. He was just expected to go to a good school as many of the boys at the school were from 'good families'. You do as your parents request, you do what your nation requests.
I don't think she dismissed his interest in birds because of that, I think she just didn't want Werner talking about it because they could get in trouble for having it
I don't think she bought him the book, that is not mentioned. Remember she put the book away as if irritated by It.
What is in the book is that when asked why he didn't leave the school and go back to his family, he said that his desires were irrelevant.
