I interpreted Zil as gay. He always seemed to go on about Lance's athletic good looks, and seemed to be more into Lance than Lisa, and I think that the fact he was struggling to understand himself and maybe despising some of the thoughts he was having was one of many sources of his outward hatred. But I guess it's up for interpretation.
